Opportunities - Do we realise them?

At times I do get disturb and start cursing my enviornment and surrounding for not giving me enough opportunities and resources to rock the world. I don’t know about others but this man I met few years ago is quite gem of a person. In hindi we say “miti se bhi sona nikal le”, means he is the kind of person who can dig gold even from sand. Such a person he is full of life, always optimistic and can turn any situation in his favour. Yes he is one of the richest people in the city and competes with his father another richest person in the same city. I don’t mean that they have rivalry. They are best buddies to each other. So, the other day I was a bit depressed by the progress of my work and complaining about the resources I didn’t have and could have done better if I had them. I was discussing it with Parth, (the person I have been talking about) during a chat session on facebook. Parth asked me, “Mohit can you please tell me what you are lacking with to get to those resources?” Obviously I said money and opportunites. He said, “Well if that is the case there is plenty of money and opportunities all around, may be you are not able to observe it.” I was a bit confused. Parth said, “Let me share a story with you.”

Around 50 years back there lived a poor boy in a lonely place with his family. This place was hardly 20 KMs away from the town but no one travelled that road much. The only thing good for this family was that their ancestors have left them this huge land with two ponds with a warning that never get depart with this land or we are watching. Tradition followed and now they were having this land which was serving them food and shelter. This boy Jagdish use to spend his time at one of the pond. He used to sit there kill his time and curse that he having such a big land can be billionaire but cannot sell it. He will sit there and throw crystal like stones in pond. It was his daily routine. He was not allowed to go there in night hours or he could have spent 24 hours there throwing stones and cursing his ancestors.

One night he was not getting sleep and went towards the pond. On his way he saw a glow coming out of pond and shining water in moon light. It was as if he was looking at a Shrine. Feeling scared he ran away. He repeated his night visits for some days having the feeling that his ancestors might visit the place during night as it was said that they will be watching. One night taking courage he went near the pond thinking that as they are his ancestors so they will not harm him. He was amazed to see the beauty of shining water and there were no traces of threat. He thought for a moment and went back to sleep. For the first time after he became young he was sleeping with a satisfied smile on his face.

Next morning he went to a furniture shop and looked for few table and chairs. He went to the shopkeeper and asked, “How about you give me these sets of furniture for free.” Shopkeeper was confused and asked why. So, Jagdish replied if you give to me for free I will offer you 20% share in my restaurant. Shopkeeper agreed but said he will deliver it on the inaugural day. The boy fixed the number and left. It was a deal. Now he needed a team which can cook and serve. So, he went to one of the best caterer in the town. He met the owner and said, “How about partnering in a restaurant which is at one best located, within the city yet away from local hustles, which serves the best candle light dinner?” The caterer immediately understood the boys point and asked when we are starting the deal. His percentage was also 20%. From here he straight away went to a nursery and asked the owner, “Do you supply plants for your own restaurant?” “I don’t own a restaurant”, replied the owner. The boy offered him 20% share for plants and some initial finance required.

He invited all the three partners and explained them his proposal. All the three partners signed the deal and Jagdish gave his thumb impression. Now the deal was furniture and maintenance by furniture guy, food and beverages by catering guy, plantation and lightening by nursery guy, idea and land of Jagdish. All four gets 20% each and 20% for restaurant emergency fund. On the inaugural day there were about 100 invitees to attend. They were amazed to see this beautiful spot near the city and away from hustle and soon the word spread out in the town and they started getting the revenue. After some time they started second restaurant on a different theme. They used the emergency fund which was never touched since they have started.

Jagdish got married and soon was blessed with a boy. Jagdish sent his boy to school, made him educated. His son one day learnt about diamonds and its glory. He was determined this day and went back home straight away went to pond dived in and saw the stones thrown by his father. He enquired about them with his father. Then he went to a jewellery shop to get these stones checked and indeed they were diamonds. With few digs the boy was amazed to find out that he lived over diamond mine. He asked the owner, “Do you wish to be a diamond merchant and move ahead from this shop to a jewellery hub?” The boy and shopkeeper went into partnership. They got the trading license and started a medium diamond showroom with diamonds of all shapes and sizes. Soon they started trading outside the city and then all over the state. Today they are trading diamonds all over the world.

That day I understood that to become successful you don’t need money; you need commitment, dedication and a will to change. And I have all these resources. I repeat these lines to me daily in the morning. Throughout the day I look for opportunities, opportunities to learn, opportunities to implement my learning, opportunities to take my learning to next level, opportunities to bring smile to others, opportunities to forgive others, opportunities to bring meaning to my existence. And many more opportunities. And what I find every day is that world is full of such opportunities and it has been a high time to realise them.

P.S. Think of yourself where you want to see yourself in 2 years from now. You can close your eyes now or you can choose to keep your eyes open. See yourself enjoying that moment, hear what you hear, concentrate on your feelings and intesify them. Think of the resources you need to reach there and pinch yourself now.

P.P.S. Now keeping your resources in mind think of available options and choose one easiest option and implement it now.
